The Delaware Air National Guard's top officer has been selected to serve as an Ex-Officio member of the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services, known by the acronym DACOWITS.

Brig. Gen. Carol Timmons

As such, Brig. Gen. Carol Timmons, Delaware's assistant adjutant general and commander of the state Air National Guard, will be a non-voting member of the committee but will represent the interests of the Office of the Secretary of Defense Reserve Affairs -- providing voting members, all civilians, with her expertise.

DACOWITS advises the secretary of defense, by way of the under secretary of defense for personnel and readiness, on all matters related to women in the U.S. military. The committee was formed in 1951 to advise the defense secretary on how to increase the participation of women, and better use women, in the armed forces. Major recommendations implemented include the 1960s recommendation to remove grade restrictions on female officers, successful mid-1970s lobbying for women to be admitted to all service academies, which Congress passed in 1976, and its successful press for women to serve in certain combat roles, including combat aviation and on Navy surface warships in the early 1990s.

Timmons is a highly decorated command C-130 pilot -- and former UH-1 helicopter flier -- with more than 5,200 hours of flying time.

Congrats to Brig. Gen. Timmons!
